There is a strong bug floating around my office. It seems to be infecting everyone. It is affecting the way we work, eat, and move. The virus is highly contagious, and it seems like it's just getting started.
It's called the Mountaintop Wellness Fitness Challenge.
Less than two weeks into the weight loss and walking challenge that I launched earlier this month, my co-workers at Moore Consulting Group are proving that competition is a good thing - and that facing new goals as a team is a great recipe for success.
It's something for the rest of you in the Badass Army to consider as you continue down your own road to a better Badass. You don't have to go it alone. And you CAN compete to win, no matter what form that "competition" takes.
The more there is on the line, and the more fellow Badasses who are "in it" with you, the likelier you all are to get to the finish. It's the same idea behind having a workout partner who meets you for your daily exercise - the peer pressure helps ensure that you show up and work, rather than just sleepwalk through the same old routine!
When I started the wellness program in my office in April, I began with high hopes for my co-workers. But even I am (pleasantly) surprised at just how enthusiastically they're diving in. It feels like they've wanted this for awhile -- all they needed was that extra push (enter me, the Badass CEO drill sergeant!)
Maybe your friends or co-workers are waiting for the same push. So what are you waiting for? Put on your Badass drill sergeant hat and start organizing something! Maybe it's the entire office, or maybe it's just you plus a few friends. Set goals. Set deadlines. Hell, have everyone throw in $20 for a big pool of cash that the "winner" gets at the end. Money motivates, people!
Consider the changes happening in just the past several weeks at Moore Consulting Group:
- Weight loss challenge participants weighed in for the first time on Monday, and they are dropping pounds and body fat. Some of them were downright giddy when their (smaller) number popped up on the scale.
- The walking challengers are waking up early for long walks, checking their pedometers regularly, and even trekking from office to office instead of using the intercom system at their desks. Every little step counts!
- One co-worker started regular sessions with a personal trainer a few months ago and has lost 6 percent of her body fat. She looks awesome.
- Our company is partnering with the cycling studio where I teach to host a daylong indoor cycling event to benefit the March of Dimes. We'll have our own "MCG Team," riding one of the bikes relay style all day.
We're also, as an office, eating better.
- After I coordinated a fridge clean-out to dump the processed fatty stuff, the fridge now has a lot more of the good stuff.
- A COnco de Mayo-themed healthy potluck a few weeks back was a huge hit (there's me, at right, unveiling the spread).
- This week, several others jumped at my offer to coordinate a weekly delivery of seasonal organic vegetables grown at a local farm. Not only will we save money on produce, but we're making an amazing investment in our health.
Another co-worker and fellow cycling enthusiast has, in the past few weeks, cut out all white flour and processed sugar from her diet. That is a hard habit to break after three-plus decades of admittedly living on the stuff, she told me. But she also says that she feels better than ever. Her glow is proof of that!
Each and every one of these accomplishments is, in a word, Badass. There is a collective conscientiousness in the office about what we're eating, how often we're exercising, and about generally trying to be more active.
Yes, donuts and bagels still make themselves into the breakroom. But they don't disappear as fast as they used to, and co-workers come to me to boast about the fact that they DIDN'T eat them. And if they do indulge, they end the day with a run around a nearby lake or an hour at the gym.
It is the kind of balance that this Badass Fitness journey is all about. And it is coming at a rapid pace, because we are doing it together. Our own little army within the Badass Army.
Hooah to that, and Happy Friday!
Now have a great Memorial Day weekend - I'll be back Tuesday with an all Badass, all Bootylicious glutes and legs routine (my antidote to the fact that I can't really do much upper body work for a few weeks)!
